Services & FAQ
Learn more about services I offer.
What do you do in a counseling session?
We talk! I can be the main talker, you can, or we can strike a balance -- it's all based on your level of comfort and communication style.
I'm most concerned with offering you a safe place where you are welcome and embraced for who you are at this point in time, no matter what you are struggling with. I focus on positive psychology and use of unconditional positive regard.
Clients are welcome and encouraged to use art supplies, games, reading and writing activities, and fidget toys if they help!
What do we talk about?
I operate in a person-centric modality, which means that what YOU want to focus on is the most important to me in any given session.
However, if you feel unsure where to start, I can help with suggestions of starting points and guide the session a little more strongly.
For the first session or two I will want to get to know where you currently stand, some of your personal history, and build our relationship. This is to protect clients from unintentional harm by moving into uncomfortable areas of processing too quickly.
How long is a session?
It's up to your comfort level. I offer 60 minute and 30 minute sessions.
For he first session for any age I recommend an hour, as I would like to discuss your intake form with you to get some basic background information before we delve into your main concerns.
What are your credentials?
I have a License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW). Achieving this required:
-
Obtaining a masters degree in social work at a CSWE-approved school
-
Passing the prerequisite exam for an LSW
-
Completing 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, with 150 hours of direct supervision and 1,500 hours of face-to-face supervision
-
Passing the ASWB clinical exam
-
Completing a background check and FBI fingerprinting
What is your office like?
Do you offer free consulations?
Yes! I offer 20 minute free consultations via phone call or video chat. This is a great way for you to see if I'm a good match for you.
How long will we keep meeting?
That is entirely up to you, and based on your needs. Some people will work with a counselor for multiple years, some only a month or two.
Some issues may feel resolved rather quickly, while others will require more time to work through. There are lots of variables that affect this!
What are your rates?
My rates for individual sessions are $125 for 50 minutes and $65 for 30 minutes.
Do you accept insurance?
I am considered an “out of network” therapist, as I do not have contracts with any insurance companies.
I can provide you with a detailed invoice or “superbill” to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement after you pay me directly for your sessions. I accept cash, check, Venmo, and Paypal. If you don't have insurance specific to mental health but have set up a pre-tax Health Care Flexible spending account with your company, my services will likely be reimbursed. Your employer’s Human Resources department can give you more information.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt of sessions that we’ve had together, with some additional information such as whether the session was in person or virtual, my license number, etc.
How much will my insurance company reimburse me?
It's wise to contact your insurance company ahead of time to see how much of my fee they will reimburse. You can find information on your insurance company’s website or app.
Sometimes mental health coverage is not covered until you meet your yearly deductible. This can vary for in network and out of network providers. I feel it is easiest to call your insurance company and speak to a representative to have them explain the full scope of your benefits.
If you choose to call your insurance company, you can tell them my fee ($125 per hour, $65 per 30 minute session) and ask how much they would reimburse for an out of network therapist.
What if I have to cancel?
Please cancel 24 hours before your expected appointment by notifying me via text, email, or phone call/voice-mail.
Cancellations less than 24 hours before a session and no-shows will result in a full session charge.
3 cancellations or no-shows in a row will require us to talk about your expectations of treatment further before we schedule again, to see if this service is a good match for your needs and availability.
What psychology principles do you employ?
Currently, I most ascribe to positive psychology, with a person-centered focus.
That said, I consider myself a life-long student and value the exploration of new modalities and practices. To that end and to maintain my licensure, I frequently complete courses to continue my education.
